LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN

Are you good at problem solving and negotiation? Are you interested in learning more about the long-term care system? Long-Term Care Ombudsman Volunteers set aside a few hours each week to visit a local long-term care facility to help promote the quality of life for residents. Ombudsmen advocate on behalf of residents and often work closely with residents, their families and facility staff to resolve problems to ensure the best quality of care. A free 36-hour training program is offered throughout the year for new ombudsmen.

HEALTH INSURANCE COUNSELING

There is no doubt about it… health insurance can be a complicated topic for those with little exposure. Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) Volunteers provide one-on-one assistance to Medicare beneficiaries to help them select supplemental insurance, prescription drug coverage, and to alert them to special programs that they might qualify for. If you are a Medicare beneficiary yourself, or soon to be one, there is no better way to stay on top of the ever-changing Medicare program than to become a HIICAP Counselor. A free training program is held yearly and regular updates are provided through monthly in-services.

ADVANCE PLANNING VOLUNTEERS

Do you feel strongly that it is important to take some measures to plan in advance for the last phase in life? Advance Planning for End of Life (APEL) Volunteers offer information and gentle assistance to individuals interested in planning for the end of life. Although focused primarily on assisting with the completion of health care proxies and living wills, APEL Volunteers also answer questions and offer referrals on funeral pre-arrangement and organ and body donation. Be a part of a growing national movement to improve the way we die in America…become an APEL Volunteer. Training is free on a range of topics that promote a healthy approach to planning in advance.
